Fifth Street
20. Is there a general rule covering this situation?
--> If you are first with what appears to be the stronger hand, and your hand would be good enough to call a bet, it is better to bet yourself and add deception that may be used to your advantage on a later poker street.
21. When is the only time that you should check a one pair but apparently made hand into an obvious four-card hand?
--> If you are up against a very strong four-card hand that may raise if you bet.
22. Example?
--> You have an 8-7-5 showing but you have paired 7s. Check this hand into a K-A-2, especially if you sometimes check a made eight-seven-five into a K-A-2.
23. Suppose you check this poker hand and your opponent now bets?
--> It is a bad call on your part if he will only bet a smooth draw.
24. Suppose both you and your opponent have three good cards showing. How do you play?
--> The better and more perceptive your opponent’s is, the more you gain by tricking him.
25. What about very strong opponents?
--> They may be best tricked by playing your hands straightforwardly, since they won’t be expecting it.
26. Example?
--> You have A-2-3 showing versus 4-5-6. If in fact you have a very strong hand, it is usually best poker strategy to check-raise weak opponent and very strong opponents, while betting into mediocre opponents.
27. How else might you play the above hand?
--> Check and call hoping to catch a bad one on sixth street and getting your raise in there.
28. Suppose you have made an eight low with the 8 in the hole and your opponent has three good cards showing.
--> Frequently raise if your opponent bets even if you suspect that you may be beaten. Now if you both catch bad cards on sixth street and he checks, you should also check.
29. What if you now catch a baby on sixth street?
--> That fifth street raise may force your opponent to fold even if the baby pairs you.
30. What if you pair on fifth street but still have a four-card hand and your pair is hidden?
--> You should usually bet if your three upcards are lower than his.
31. But suppose you have paired and your three upcards are higher than the three he has showing?
--> You have at beast a marginal call depending on the cards that are out and the amount of money in the pot. Usually fold.
32. If you are up against a player who will bet an 8-7-5 showing even if he has a pair what should you do with a good four-card hand?
--> Usually raise.
33. In this same situation, if you appear to have a four-card hand but have just paired on fifth street, (giving you only a three-card low). What should you do?
--> Usually fold.
34. What if your opponent is scared of your board in this spot?
--> You might call or even raise when you have paired in the hope that you will catch a baby on sixth and win it there. This play comes with experience and knowing your opponents.
35. In general, on fifth poker street, when is it correct to try the above tricks and traps?
--> Only when the hands appear about even and you are against a good player
